Nederland

The city of Delft was made famous by two enormously popular early exports: the first is what is now called delftware, a style of tin-glazed earthenware; the second is the painter Johannes Vermeer who was born in Delft. Delftware drew its inspiration from the majolica of Portugal and the porcelain of China—both of which passed through Dutch ports— and Delft became a center of their particular style from the second half of the seventeenth century. So inspired were they by porcelain from China that their work more frequently displayed scenes taken from Chinese pottery than that of daily life in the Netherlands.
