Hesperios Knit Library Artifact

Aotearoa

There were only thirty-six South Island saddlebacks in 1964. A medium-sized songbird native to New Zealand, the saddleback was the first species to be saved by translocation when they were moved to nearby islands. Also called the tīeke or jackbird, they have a fricative upbeat call, a “saddle” of caramel feathers across their back, and bright droplet wattles at the corner of each beak. Though similar, the North Island saddlebacks are often considered a whole distinct species and the juvenile birds have a totally different appearance.
