In the first version of this war trilogy the poet speaks of a 'new master' who is 'Mage, bringing myrrh'. Following The Walls do not Fall, we find in the second series of poems, Tribute to the Angels, a reference to a symbolic or mystical book that will contain 'a tale of a jar of jars'. Here, in this last volume of the series, The Flowering of the Rod is that tale.
