Sorbus aucuparia in latin, the rowan is a tree whose powers are far older than its scientific name. It grows beside churches and the oldest highland homesteads, where it was planted to ward off witches. Part of the rose family, its abundant red berries grow in clusters like so many bonny blooms. The tree is among Scotland’s heartiest, and it offers its autumn ruby harvest high in the highlands at altitudes beyond most flora.
