In the 1990s when an economic boom brought a burst of construction to the Egyptian city of Alexandria, significant pieces of the celebrated ancient city came to light. Among the archeological finds were elements of a university complex, possibly the world’s oldest. The Pharos of Alexandria—the city’s lighthouse and one of the Seven Wonders of the World—are thought to have stood for two millennia at 440 feet.
