Like other great capitals of the pre-modern era, Sevilla reached grand heights when, under the ŹæAbbādid dynasty, it was home to a diversity of peoples and religions. When the Spanish Christians under Ferdinand III banished the Jewish and Muslim populations, the prosperity of the city suffered. Grand buildings remain, however—one of the legacies of the flourishing capital of the ŹæAbbādid—and include the AlcĆ”zar Palace. Seville continued to produce significant artists even as the general fortunes of the city rose and fell. These include the painters Diego VelĆ”zquez and Francisco de ZurbarĆ”n, and the writer Miguel de Cervantes.
