Alpacas, the long-necked, fleecy members of the camel family, held an essential place in the vast Incan empire. A flourishing civilization that predated the Romans, the Incas saw alpacas as literal measures of wealth. Robes of alpaca wool—and that of their relative, the vicuña—were at times reserved for royalty, and increments of wealth were noted through a counting system that involved knots in strands of alpaca wool.
