Christina Zimpel, Synthesis of 3 / No. 2020.5
Christina Zimpel's 2020 botanical series for Hesperios. Using ink, gauche, and fluorescent acrylic mediums, Christina's minimalistic interpretations of flowers, trees, and plants are inspired by her own garden and the joy the small patch of greenery brings to the insects, birds, and fellow pollinators of NYC.
Zimpel is a female artist from Perth, Australia, now Brooklyn based. A graphic design graduate and former art director at Australian and US Vogue, Zimpel has been painting full time for three years. What started as a hobby with a series of self-portraits done through a mirror in pencil quickly led to her quitting her day job to pursue her art.
She prefers to paint at her kitchen table, in the 1870’s red-brick townhouse in Clinton Hill that she shares with her husband, the photographer Patric Shaw.
‘I like layers to give the piece structure,’ she says. ‘I overlay pencil with ink, before using acrylic paint to give opacity and richness of colour.’ Zimpel's minimal style focuses on color, layers, simple shapes, and calculated compositions.
Hesperios hosted an art show in collaboration with Book/Shop of Christina’s work in 2018.
