Ísland
Like the robin in the American Northeast, the European gold plover is said to herald spring in Iceland, where about half of the total plover population breed. Their latin name has been translated to mean “to bask in the sun” and though their conservation status is “of least concern” their numbers are nevertheless decreasing worldwide, due in part to a decrease of their shore grass habitat.
