England
At their highest point at Beachy Head, the towering chalk downs of Eastbourne, England, rise 500 feet straight up from the sea. The cliffs face south, receiving direct winds and other severe weather. Beachy Head is part of the chalk south downs. The word “down,” comes not from the opposite of up, but from the old English dūn, meaning “hill.” Over the years, figures have been cut into such hills to dramatically expose the white chalky soil. Historians believe some figures remain from as long ago as fifty BC.
